(FEB. 18, 2026) — Cherokee Recreation and Parks breaks ground on new park in southwest Cherokee

County officials joined Cherokee Recreation and Parks staff on Tuesday, Feb. 17, to celebrate the groundbreaking of the future Woodworth Park, a new 56-acre park located at 2700 Old Highway 92 in Acworth.

The property was identified as a priority in the Southwest Cherokee Parks and Trails Plan, which was developed in 2019 and 2020 with extensive public input and formally adopted by the Board of Commissioners in 2021. The plan helped guide the vision and master planning for the new park.

“Having a large park in southwest Cherokee with immediate access to Highway 92 will allow everyone to enjoy the park,” said Cherokee County District 4 Commissioner Corey Ragsdale, who represents the district where the park is located. “Part of our plan is to connect the park to nearby developments with sidewalks and multi-use paths. Accessibility is one of the most important factors in choosing this park location, and residents will be able to access the park by walking or biking.”

Ragsdale also expressed appreciation for the many partners who helped bring the project to this milestone.

“I have so much gratitude today, from the contractors to the architect and all the county staff involved. I’m just so excited this is happening,” Ragsdale said. “It’s been seven years since we started this plan, and while it takes time for projects like this to come together, it’s great to see it moving forward.”

The Board of Commissioners awarded the construction contract to Vertical Earth, LLC in September 2025.

Construction is now underway on the park’s first phase, which includes the entrance, parking area, playground, event lawn, and walking trails. Additional amenities are planned as part of the current SPLOST program, including athletic fields, expanded trail systems, and the county’s third recreation and senior center.
